Sandra Mitchell is a lifelong resident of Lynchburg, Virginia, the only child of Mabel and Eugene Farmer. Sandra credits her mother, who would take her to various churches where she would worship and Sandra would perform solos, with bringing her to faith in Jesus Christ at the age of eleven. Sandra was baptized at Eighth Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg, where she is currently the clerk of the church.
As a result of her church performances, Sandra also developed a love of music and art to accompany her love for animals, and these passions would guide her future activities. She attended local schools, graduating from E.C. Glass High School in 1970. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Virginia Union University, an HBCU (historically black college or university) in Richmond, Virginia, and her master's degree in education on a reading specialist track from Lynchburg College. She has also taken post-graduate courses with Argosy University Online. Sandra has taught in the Lynchburg City Schools since 1976 and is currently a reading specialist and literary coach at Dearington Elementary School for Innovation.
Sandra married Roscoe C. "Rocky" Mitchell, her college sweetheart, 35 years after they broke up, and she has two stepchildren and two grandchildren, and "three beautiful goddaughters."
Sandra is devoted to giving back to the community and has served with numerous organizations, to include the Lynchburg Humane Society as a member of their board of directors, the central Virginia alumni chapter of Virginia Union University, and the Equity Task Force for Lynchburg Public Schools. She has been a member of the No Walls Ministry board of directors since 2015, and states, "I believe in what this organization does for others in our area. Also, I believe God has placed me here for a reason. I am privileged to be a part of this community organization. I am sure God will show me how I will be used here."
